Start by checking the appliance's power rating, usually printed on a label or plate on the back or base of the unit. This tells you the wattage you need to cover.
Reduce a higher voltage down to match your appliance — for example converting 240V UK mains down to 110–120V for US equipment.
Do the opposite, raising a lower voltage up to match — for example converting 110–120V up to 240V so a UK appliance can run in the US.
